The cam chuck was designed to fill a need for a simple cost effective mechanical core chuck. ACE uses these chucks in our equipment and sells them to other users and equipment manufacturers. The basic principal of the Cam Chuck is very simple. It consists of a shell that moves with the core and a body that moves with the shaft or brake. As the material is pulled, the shell rotates with the core and climbs a cam surface. This causes the shell to expand and wedge between the material core and the body of the chuck. Reversing the direction of the torque unlocks the chuck. If the reverse torque is continued, the chuck will relock in the other direction.
